Hair Extensions (Frequently Asked Questions)
What are hair extensions?
Hair Extensions are a way of adding hair to your existing hair to enhance length, volume, color and style. BRIJON’s hair is made from 100% human Remy Indian hair and comes in a large variety of colors, lengths and styles.
Will extensions damage my hair?
No, extensions will not damage your hair. BRIJON uses specially designed technologies with its products to ensure that is safe with your own hair. It is critical, however, that customers have their extensions installed by a certified BRIJON salon, or other reputable accredited extensionist. Lastly, it is important that customers properly take care of and maintain their hair. Details on hair care are presented in the “Hair Care & Maintenance” section of this manual.
Where does the hair come from?
All BRIJON’s hair comes from India and is 100% human Remy hair. All of the hair is sourced from women of Indian descent and so the hair is homogeneous in color and thickness. Further, we never use any synthetic , animal or mixed hair. In India, women donate their hair to the Temples as a way of saying thanks for the many blessings in their lives. Because women grow their hair long and do not chemically treat their hair as in other cultures, the hair is of a much higher, natural quality.
Will there be shedding?
Our hair extensions are designed to hold very strong, and to have very limited shedding. We use a very strong keratin bond for our tips, and our wefts are triple-stitched to secure the hair to the track. Hair, however, will naturally shed (on average, 100 hairs per day) so you will see some natural shedding, similar to what occurs with your own hair. To minimize shedding, please follow the Hair Care & Maintenance guidelines in this manual.
How are extensions applied to your own hair?
There are various methods used to apply hair extensions, but BRIJON has developed proven techniques that they recommend with their different hair extension products. These techniques are taught in the BRIJON training courses. These techniques include the following:
- Fusion Technique: This is used with our Keratin Tips. This strand-by-strand technique includes using a fusion connector to melt the keratin polymer and to connect the extension to the customer’s own hair. BRIJON provides pre-tipped bonds, as well as bulk hair and keratin products to create your own tips.
- Micro-links: This method is used with our i-Tips and Machine Wefts. Micro-links are cylinder rings that come in different sizes and materials (aluminum, copper and silicone). The customer’s hair is pulled through the rings using a pulling needle and then clamped down flat.
What is Remy hair?
Remy is considered the highest quality hair because the cuticles are in-tact and are running in the same direction as the customer’s own hair. The cuticles protect your hair and so it is important that they remain intact to prevent damage and tangling or matting. Furthermore, this enables the hair to last much longer. BRIJON uses ONLY 100% Remy hair, and each of our packages of hair include hair that originates from one individual ensuring consistency.
Historically, the term Remy originates from the practice of Indian women donate or "remitting" their hair to the Temple in gratitude for some blessing in their life, or after they are married. BRIJON purchases hair from the Temple and these funds are used to provide food and housing for under-privileged individuals and to operate area hospitals, colleges and other charitable organizations. BRIJON is very focused on giving back to the community and these significant donations to the temples are used to support these charitable organizations.
What lengths does BRIJON available?
BRIJON offers hair from 10” to 36”, although we typically maintain two primary lengths in stock: 18” and 22” - 24”. Other lengths require longer lead-times to deliver.
How many different styles of extensions does BRIJON offer?
BRIJON offers four (4) primary types of hair extensions:
- Keratin Tips
- i-Tips
- Wefts
- Bulk (loose hair)
What are the different hair styles?
BRIJON offers seven different hair styles. There are three natural styles: Straight, Wavy and Curly, and four processed styles: Jackson Wave, Deep Wave, Body Wave and Yaki.
What is the weight of the different hair types?
BRIJON’s hair has standard weights as outlined below:
- Tips (Keratin Tips, i-Tips): 0.8 grams/strand
- Wefts: 100 Grams (3.5 ounces)
- Bulk: 100 Grams (3.5 ounces)
How much hair is needed to complete a full head?
We typically recommend that customers use the following volume of hair to cover an individual’s head:
- Bulk: 1-2 packs
- Weft: 1-2 packs
- Keratin Tips, i-Tips: 100 – 150 tips
What types of Keratin is used for the Keratin Tips?
We use a very high quality keratin that has been sourced from Italy. This keratin holds well and can be removed using BRIJON’s EX Keratin Bond Remover. All of our Keratin Tips are flat shaped.
What colors do you offer?
Indian hair is a natural dark brown/black. We offer this natural color and 40+ colors that include combination colors and fantasy colors. Please refer to our Color Chart for images of each of our colors.
How is BRIJON’s hair colored?
As noted above, all Indian hair is a natural dark brown/black color. Because this color inherently maintains all of the colors, our coloring process involves a careful de-colorization process. This process involves gently lifting the natural color from the hair in order to create our different colors. For our Fantasy Colors, these cannot be naturally produced and are created using a special high quality dye.
How long do hair extensions last?
The longevity of hair extensions is based on the care provided by the individual. Usually, hair extensions last 3-6 months, although we have customers that have worn their same hair extensions for over a year! It is important for customers to visit their stylist on an on-going basis to evaluate the status of the extensions, to adjust the hair as necessary to account for growth, etc. Indian hair is much more durable than other types of hair because it has not been chemically treated and so it does not have inherent damage. Also, human hair lasts significantly longer than synthetic or mixed hair.
Can I color the hair?
Yes, you can color your hair, although it is recommended that this only be done with the darker colors. If coloring is performed, it is recommended that you go to your salon or certified colorist to ensure that it is properly done.
Can I comb/brush my hair?
Absolutely. You are able to comb and brush your hair as you would your own hair. We suggest using BRIJON’s wide-toothed comb or brushes specifically designed for hair extensions. When brushing your hair, start from the bottom and work your way up while holding the top part steady to keep it from shedding or stretching. Do not use hard brush strokes. If you have tangles, please comb gently and apply BRIJON’s Polishing Milk which helps loosen tangles.
Can I wash, shampoo and blow-dry the hair?
Yes. Since all of our hair is human, it can be treated like your own hair. We do suggest, however, for Keratin Tip installations that the customer wait up to three days after installation to shampoo their hair. This will ensure that the bonds have settled and are firmly in place. We suggest using our Wet Line products that are specifically designed to work with our hair extensions.
Does hair lose its wave after becoming wet?
Hair should not lose its wave in the rain or swimming, in part because Indian hair has a natural wave to it. There are, of course, precautions to take to protect your hair when swimming such as applying EX Conditioner before/after swimming and washing your hair after swimming to remove the chlorine. It is also recommended to wash your hair if you get caught in the rain.
Can I perm, flat iron and blow-dry my extensions?
Yes. You can treat your hair as you would your own natural hair. Wash and style your hair and use the recommended BRIJON hair products.
How do I wash and dry my hair extensions?
Please refer to the “Hair Care & Maintenance” section for details on Washing & Drying.
Can I swim and go in the ocean?
Yes, you can go in swimming pools and hot tubs. It is best to wash your hair right after swimming. If you go into salt water (ocean), be sure to always wear a swim cap made of latex. Braid the hair in two braids to ensure that all of the hair is protected and tucked neatly under the cap. Following swimming, be sure to wash your hair immediately to remove any damaging chemical that may have snuck under your cap. Also, use the EX Reconstructor spray after swimming.
Does it hurt when having my extensions applied or removed?
No, the extension process is designed to be painless. The only item some clients may experience is a slight pull. When removing Keratin Tips, we recommend using BRIJON’s EX Keratin Bond Remover. This makes the removal process much easier.
